10:46 pm - a travesty: ms. vanderpool's exploits remain uncollected
okay, so there's a collection of ernest hemingway's "nick adams" stories. great. but why doesn't jean stafford's Emily Vanderpool character get the same treatment?

11:37 pm - this is the new outsider art
making music videos for songs that don't have music videos.

one thing that's amused me, in hunting for stuff by the bands i like, down youtube way, is the sheer number of amateur responses, tablature readings, and homemade rough-cobbled worship videos that are out there.

here's a few that kind of stood out.

"born in xixax" by nina hagen, "heart it races" the dr. dog version, and "when water comes to life" by cloud cult.

all turned into videos by enthusiastic fans.

consider though, that video auteurs "Ohh Mary Mary" got their start posting little home-made videos for their own songs in similar fashion. and then they went on to direct the new Ravonettes video. what is one to think of it all??

anyway, dig...

oh! by the way, here's a li'l link to my youtube collection of current favorite music videos:

11:16 am - Mr. Lonely! new Harmony Korine! the world is whole again!
this is the trailer for Harmony Korine's new film. it looks truly mindbending and yet, he's clearly reeled it in a bit and learned how to tell a story, while not sacrificing a whit of the style and unruly temperament. it's a story about celebrity impersonators that build their own secret world. a commune of sorts in which to play out their identity games. and there looks to be something of a tender romance, even! between michael jackson and marilyn monroe, no less! dig!

4:26 pm - thy will be undone
so! somehow, one of god's instruments has fallen into sinister hands. that is to say, the sinister hands of Your Pal Jumblie. you see, recently i came across precisely the synthesizer i had been a-wanting and a-wishing for (the Korg Radias, to be precise), available used but shiny at a local shoppe. not only that, but on investigation i found that the previous owner had created all sorts of nifty sounds, lots of electric piano variants and thick chunky bassy rasps for use with robot music. a brief trial and i knew i had to own this thingy, and so i bought it at once.

well, upon getting home, i dug out the user manual, only to discover that the previous owner had done some writing on the back cover. a sort of mantra, or more like a pep talk. in a spiky scribble, here is what was thereon writ:

"Walk in the Anointing not the annoying
the Anointing Draws, being annoying repels
the Anointing Draws people to Jesus
being annoying repels people away from you because you're in the FLESH"

one can't help but wonder about someone whose personal creed contains the word "annoying" three times and who felt the need to write this down to remind themselves "don't be annoying cuz it makes people not want to let you bring 'em to jay-zus!" then i started noticing that several of the settings, the electric pianos and strings and such that he'd created, had titles like "preacher's rap", "5th commandment", "heavenly"...and a couple had specific dates. the dates suggest to me that not only was this synth used for creating, er, gody music, but that it was used in live settings, maybe at church services. hot damn! i mean, hot darn.

then i found the ultimate. a preset songy thing. super techno beats and all that, thumpity thump with rising synth string riffs. and when it reached its inevitable crescendo? the robot voices kicked in. see, the Radias has a "vocoder" which lets you do things with your vocals, which is going to let me create robotic jumble such-n-suches. and the previous owner had made good use of the vocoder as well! over and over, during the techno song's climax, the robots proclaimed "jesus is lawd jesus is lawd (beat) jesus is lawd jesus is lawd." downright hilarious.

so, my mission is clear. i must use this synthesizer to create some extremely blasphemous, unholy musics. like, for satan, even. really now, what choice have i? anyone want to help record some evil music?

7:00 pm - another painful christmas memory brought to you by your pal jumblie
i love and hate it in equal measures.

i'm referring, naturally, to  "a year without a santa claus", kind of a cynical xxxmas special at the peak of the Rankin/Bass era of tv holiday specials. R/B being the creators of  the original "rudolph the red nose reindeer" christmas stop-motion masterpiece (they also created "mad monster party", an excerpt of which i showed around halloween and a particular favorite of jumblie!)

if i recall the plot properly, Santa Claus decides he's had it with all the rotten kids and delivering toys and the whole lot. no, i know that sounds like one of my usual lies and distortions, but i'm pretty sure that's exactly what happens.  he announces to the world that he's taking a year off,  that there'll be no christmas that year, raising a finger to the baby jesus in the process (yay santa!!!)

as the rest of the world reels in a state of panic, shock, and despair, the meddling Mrs. Claus intervenes and, when unable to cajole her husband through kind words and browbeating,  forces two gullible elves to do her insidious bidding, sending them and a reindeer (blitzen, i think; how else are they to fly to their various locations?) on a mission to...well, i forget what exactly. but somehow the heat and snow mizer are begged for their assistance.  no, i remember now, they have to convince the human race to beg santa to please get back on schedule, to unite and show that there is still love in the world and.... the tears of innocent children and that sort of thing.

well, the elves bungle things and somehow the reindeer is mistaken for a dog and imprisoned at the pound. can i possibly be recalling this correctly? things work out, ultimately. they always do.

anyway, if anyone can remember why the elves would go to heat and snow mizer, please inform me because for the life of me i can't imagine what good either of these individuals would do in terms of saving christmas. i do appreciate the underlying pagan themes of "a year without a santa claus".  and santa spends most of the show being very angry at the world. who can't relate to that?

1:00 am - hail to the king!
ah, to be obsessed with the written word! to be obsessed with a particular Writer of said words!  and, more to the point, to be obsessed with said writer's very particular Sentence Structure!

in last week's New Yorker, a story appeared that filled jumblie with glee.  the reason it resonated in such a way that i had No Choice but to share it with the class?

let's just say, it struck a chord.

12:38 pm - cats & spoons & peaches, all for you!
well, this is certainly good news. Catpower's new LP comes out at the beginning of january, 2008. title: Jukebox. it's a follow-up of sorts to the acoustic "covers album", but with a full band (including members of Dirty 3, Blues Explosion, and some of the motown session guys that played on "the greatest".  mm mm good!

here's a li'l 80 second preview that Matador put on youtube, of the cat n friends in the studio.

while we're at it, here's the video for the "living proof" video, directed by harmony korine of all people!

and gee, since we're talking musics,  here's the video for Spoon's "the underdog". if you haven't listened to the "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" LP yet, you should download it at once. the song "finer feelings", for which there is unfortunately no accompanying video, is maybe my favorite tune released in 2007. the entire album makes me feel nostalgic in this weird and decidedly pleasant way.

finally, check this out! my beloved Moldy Peaches doing a li'l reunion performance at the premiere of the film "Juno". i only just discovered that the soundtrack for this movie mostly features MP and solo Kimya Dawson songs.  oh, just imagine for a moment a world in which kimya D. gets an oscar nomination for best song and plays at the academy awards. that, friends, is a world that i could surely live in. the fingers of a jumblie are crossed. "here is the church and here is the steeple / we sure are cute for two ugly people / i don't see what anyone can see in anyone else but you!" in any case, considering the ecstatic review that i read in this week's New Yorker for "Juno", and the fact that suddenly there's advertising Everywhere for this flick, i think Kimya Dawson's album sales are about to get a boost (word to the wise: download her LP "hidden vagenda" at once).
